Update your family's iPhones

Look Twice | Tuesday, October 20, 2026

Good morning.

Going around now: a fake iPhone Duo preorder page

Real preorders for Apple's new foldable iPhone Duo opened on October 16. Before you order, watch out for a fake one. AARP warned about a copycat site that offers a $500 voucher. Hidden code called DarkSword tries to break into older iPhone software as soon as the page opens. You don't even have to fill out the form. Trend Micro says just opening the page can put passwords at risk.

Opened the page? Update and restart the phone. Then change your email, Apple Account and bank passwords from a device you trust.

Your 2-minute fix: update every iPhone in the family

Apple says phones with up-to-date software are protected, AARP reports. Apple's security note also warns about a separate flaw that "may have been exploited". The fix for phones still on iOS 26 is iOS 26.7.1. Phones on iOS 27 are not affected by that flaw, TechCrunch reports.

Do this today:

  1. On your iPhone or iPad, go to Settings > General > Software Update. Install the latest update.

  2. On the same screen, turn on Automatic Updates.

  3. Do the same on your kids' phones and your parents' phones. A quick call can walk them through it.

Quick alerts

  • Fake "you're not registered to vote" texts. The FBI says victims get a text or email saying they are not registered in their state. The link leads to a fake page that steals personal details, the FBI warns. Don't tap the link. Check your registration at vote.gov instead.

  • Health data breach letters are going out. Five health care vendor breaches affected nearly 36 million people, Medical Daily reports. Got a letter? Check it with your doctor or health plan, using the number on their official website. Then read every Explanation of Benefits for care you never got.

  • Windows computers need an update too. Microsoft fixed a flaw that attackers are already using, Malwarebytes reports. Go to Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates. Then restart.
